Zero Waste Humboldt Recruits Volunteers for North Country Fair
Since its inception, the North Country Fair has had containers and systems for recycling at the Fair. In a first time, cooperative project with the Same Old People, Inc. fair board and the Humboldt Waste Management Authority (HWMA), Zero Waste Humboldt is recruiting volunteers to further reduce the waste generated at the Fair this year. Volunteers are needed at the Saturday, September 15th and Sunday, September 16th Fair on the Arcata Plaza to greet the public, serve as quality control monitors for recycling and composting containers, and conduct surveys of fairgoers.
Volunteers will be trained to monitor compostables and recyclables containers; conduct surveys of fairgoers; and staff the Zero Waste Humboldt public education booth on both days. Large crowds attend annually to enjoy music, local crafts, community booths, and locally made food and beverages. Zero Waste Humboldt's goal is to reduce the waste generated at all Redwood Coast large public events, fairs, and festivals. This pilot program in cooperation with HWMA will emphasize a switch from plastic beer cups, plates, and eating utensils to compostables. This system will be tested for operational efficiency and the public's adoption of the new habits required. Responsible volunteers are needed to greet the public at 6 different stations around the Plaza to make sure they know which containers are for recycling and which containers are for composting. Volunteers will also be trained to conduct a survey of fairgoers. While the Zero Waste Humboldt mission of waste reduction (directly related to global warming) is serious, volunteers will have a fun time at this traditional North Country Fair. With 4-hour shifts in twos at each of the six stations and others to conduct the surveys in the crowds, a large volunteer crew is needed! HSU, CR and community groups who enjoy working together will be ideal for this project. Please contact Zero Waste Humboldt immediately, if you are interested so that you can be trained in advance. A training session will be scheduled on the Plaza before the Fair. Please reply by email to the ZWH Fair Volunteer Coordinator: margaret.gainer@gmail.com.
