With summer right around the corner, the NEC is gearing up for an active season of outreach and communication.
We look forward to participating in events like the Oyster Festival and North Country Fair, as well as tabling at the North Coast Co-op to bring you information about our involvement with the Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) process and our other activities to protect and preserve our local bioregion.
As we get more involved with the MLPA process, we'll be keeping the web site updated.
Thanks to our volunteers and sponsors, we had a very successful River Clean Up day on May 15. Twenty-five volunteers gathered at the Pumphouse #4 parking lot and moved on to three specific dump locations along Warren Creek – a tributary to the Mad River. The size of the dumps was shocking, but even more amazing was the positive impact that 25 people can have in just a few hours.
We shuttled all the trash to one large dumpster donated for the day by the Arcata Garbage Company. Afterward, we celebrated with donated pizza and beer – thanks to Big Pete’s Pizza and Mad River Brewing Company for their generosity.
Our next trash removal project will be at the Annual California Coastal Clean Up on September 25. Gather up your groups and get ready to clean your favorite beach. As always, the Northcoast Environmental Center will provide bags, gloves, tally sheets, etc. We look forward to hearing from you!
This year we will be signing up volunteers for Coastal Clean Up at the North Country Fair, and after the fair we hope you’ll all party with us at the Arcata Community Center at our All Species Ball on Saturday, September 18, with music by the Bucky Walters, Absynth Quintet and more. Get your costumes ready! We hope to see you on the dance floor.
